Annotation

The article sets out and solves the problem of drawing parallels and identifying analogies in the understanding of the purposes of punishment in the church law of the Russian Empire and modern criminal law. Based on the use of historical-legal, formal-legal and comparative-legal methods, this task was successfully solved. It is emphasized that the Orthodox system of values, which is one of the key foundations of Russian civilization, significantly influenced the formation of legislation during the existence of the Russian Empire. A parallel is drawn between the correction of a convicted person and his repentance. The conclusion is made about the influence of the purpose of ecclesiastical punishment on the understanding of the purpose of punishment in modern criminal law through the legal tradition formed under the influence of ecclesiastical and canonical law.
