Annotation
The article analyzes various aspects of financing and state support of scientific developments. In particular, the concepts of “philanthropy” and “charity”, their definitions
and interpretations by many famous Russian scientists are considered in a retrospective aspect. The purpose of the study is to consider the legal regulation of charity and patronage activities in various branches of science in pre-revolutionary Russia. The methodological basis of the research is general scientific methods of cognition
(system analysis, logical) and special legal methods (comparative legal). The author compares and emphasizes the characteristic features of state support and private initiative for scientific research in a historical perspective, demonstrates their importance in achieving advanced results by many young talented scientists. It is concluded
that academic science, research and development are inextricably linked not only with state support, but also with private initiative charity and patronage.
